Kenya has made progress towards the development and implementation of an elaborate legal, policy and administrative framework to promote gender equality and equity. However, women and girls still experience direct and indirect discrimination in society. In some instances, discriminatory laws curtail their full participation in the social, economic, political, cultural and educational spheres.
The UN-Women and International Development Law Organization undertook a preliminary legal assessment of the laws of Kenya to identify gaps and critically analyze the provisions that are discriminatory and result in women and girls being disempowered, which has culminated in a Report titled "Strengthening Gender Equality in Law: Mapping Discriminatory Laws Against Women and Girls in Kenya".
In line with its mission to provide leadership in law reform, through the continuous review of the law, ensuring its systematic development and reform in conformity with the Constitution, the Kenya Law Reform Commission recognizes that the Report provides a useful baseline of the discriminatory laws that have been identified across a range of thematic areas, including women’s economic empowerment, family and personal status laws and makes proposals for their reform.
In partnership with the UN-Women and International Development Law Organization, the Commission, will be launching the Report on the 24th April, 2024 The launch will be an opportunity to bring the Report to the attention of the Government, civil society organizations, academia, international organizations and other actors in the thematic areas.
